Butterfly Effect by Ana Vizcarra Rankin

Ana Vizcarra Rankin’s Butterfly Effect formally explores scientific research topics, philosophical thought, and migrating movements.

The artist explores聽both micro and macro perspectives of the world and space, and the exhibit includes Rankin’s constellation and world maps, global flight trackers, and studies of subatomic particles. Using images captured with powerful telescopes and other mediating technologies such as聽global positioning systems, Rankin creates art that explores the phenomenological sense of being in 鈥� and of 鈥� the聽universe.

Rankin was born in Maldonado, Uruguay, and pays homage to the great avant-garde artist of her birthplace,聽Joaqu脥n Torres-Garc铆a. Included in the exhibit is El Sur, part of her series Large World Maps which positions the聽Southern Hemisphere at the top of the picture plane, symbolic of defining South America in its own terms rather聽than in relation to North America. Rankin emphasizes the dualities found in the inverted maps and the reorienting聽of our realities through these visuals.

A graduate of Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Temple University, Rankin lives and works in聽Philadelphia. She has exhibited extensively including at PhilaMOCA in Pennsylvania; Rowan University Art Gallery, New Jersey; The聽Gallery at Instituto Cervantes, Illinois; and Bickett Gallery, North Carolina. Rankin鈥檚 work is held in numerous private and public聽collections, including the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Brandywine River Museum of Art, Uruguay聽Cultural Foundation for the Arts, Peoria Riverfront Museum, Brooklyn Art Library, and Print Council of Australia.
